NEW YORK (AP) — Pfizer Inc. is about to begin selling its own generic version of its painkiller Celebrex, a company that it says is helping millions of patients take painkiller pills.
Pfizer Inc. and its other top-selling drugs, including Vioxx, are about to begin selling their own generic versions of its painkillers — the active ingredient in the painkillers that block the body's production of a hormone called Cox-2, which plays a key role in the development of cancer.
The drugs, which include Bextra, Bextra XR and Vioxx, are being sold by the New York-based company under the trade name of Celebrex. Pfizer is buying all of its generic Celebrex, which Pfizer says has been approved for use as a painkiller, up until the end of the year. Pfizer has not yet revealed whether it will sell the generic Celebrex.
Pfizer says it will start selling its own Celebrex, which will cost $60 a pill, in about 30-60 days, while the rest of the country buys the generic version.
Pfizer says that while Celebrex is a painkiller, it's not the same as a Cox-2 inhibitor, or a NSAID, which makes blood vessels constricting.
It is not clear whether Pfizer will begin selling the generic version of the drug by the end of this year, or if it will launch its own generic version of Celebrex in the coming weeks.

Celebrex was developed by Pfizer and is used as a painkiller, McKinnell said.

The company's other arthritis drug, Vioxx II, is approved for the treatment of osteoarthritis and arthritis pain in people who have been diagnosed with it, Pfizer said in a statement. It has also been approved for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis.
Pfizer says the Celebrex drug is the first of a group of arthritis painkillers that treat pain, and Vioxx, the company's first arthritis-drug in more than half a century, is the next. The Celebrex is available only by prescription and is expected to be available in packs of 20 or 30 pills, Pfizer said.
Celebrex is the sixth arthritis-drug to enter the market after rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, which are autoimmune diseases.
